2 PhD Anniversary Research International Students Scholarship at Bangor University, UK

Bangor University Announce PhD Anniversary Research Studentships, UK

Study Subject: Implementation in Health and Social Care
Employer: The School of Healthcare Sciences, Bangor University
Level: PhD
Scholarship Description: Children with disabilities tend to have frequent contact with health, social care, and specialist education services as they grow up. Whilst health outcomes have improved, disabled children experience some of the most significant physical and mental health disparities in our society. Some children and families, however, appear to be more ‘resilient’ to early challenging childhood experiences than others. Current services rarely specifically focus on promoting wellbeing and resilience in children with disabilities. Little is known about what constitutes ‘resilience promoting’ interventions and services to promote wellbeing, and work needs to be undertaken to understand better how resilience can be promoted and measured. This studentship will explore conceptual, methodological, measurement and interventional issues in relation to wellbeing, resilience and disabled children. Significant energies are directed at closing the gap between the producers of knowledge, public policy, service delivery and the experiences and outcomes of service users. In health and social care, for example, there is a need to base practice on evidence of ‘what works’, although getting evidence into practice is complex and dependent on multiple factors. A wide range of international and national implementation research programmes are being conducted at Bangor University with partners in health and social care and other public services which will provide a foundation for PhD studentships.

PhD International Studentships Scholarship in EGFR and Related Therapeutic Targets in Mesothelioma, UK

Study Subject: EGFR and Related Therapeutic Targets in Mesothelioma
Employer: Hull York Medical School
Level: PhD
Scholarship Description: PhD studentship – EGFR and related therapeutic targets in mesothelioma. Applications are sought from suitably-qualified people wishing to pursue research leading to PhD status under the supervision of leading researchers. Applicants will be expected to hold a minimum of a UK upper second class Honours degree, or equivalent, in an appropriate discipline. This full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarship will include fees at the ‘home/EU’ student rate and maintenance (£13,490 in 2010/11, subject to final confirmation) for three years, depending on satisfactory progress. Supervisors:- Dr Lynn Cawkwell, Prof Michael Lind Median survival for patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is extremely poor and there is a need for effective treatment modalities. EGFR is overexpressed in MPM and in vitro studies show that EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy can induce cytotoxicity in MPM cells. However two small trials show that EGFR TKi’s may not be effective in MPM. The mechanisms of resistance to EGFR TKI therapy may be associated with absence of activating mutations in the EGFR TK domain. Other mechanisms may include loss of PTEN protein (with activation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway) or transactivation of EGFR by PGE2. There are no published studies assessing anti-EGFR mAbs in MPM; these are not dependent on the presence of activating mutations at the TK domain. The PTEN, PI3K/AKT/mTOR and PGE2 pathways must be fully investigated in MPM. For example, novel combination therapy using an anti-EGFR mAb with a PGE2 or AKT/mTOR inhibitor may show enhanced therapeutic potential for these patients.
